  • Mark Zuckerberg Says Muslims Are Welcome at Facebook

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has added his voice of support to Muslims around the world, saying they should not be persecuted for the violent acts of extremists.

"As a Jew, my parents taught me that we must stand up against attacks on all communities. Even if an attack isn't against you today, in time attacks on freedom for anyone will hurt everyone," Zuckerberg wrote In a Facebook post on Wednesday.

"If you're a Muslim in this community, as the leader of Facebook I want you to know that you are always welcome here and that we will fight to protect your rights and create a peaceful and safe environment for you."

Zuckerberg's comments come amid a spate of anti-Muslim backlash in the U.S. and abroad following the recent Paris terror attacks and the mass-shooting in San Bernadino, California. Among the more provocative statements has been GOP presidential contender Donald Trump's call to ban all Muslims from entering the United States.

  • 10 Harmful effects of technological dependence on health and lifestyle

The human civilization underwent many changes and developments with the passage of time. Early man lived in caves and forests. They lived on the food available in the forests. Science and technological advancement has blessed mankind with all the basic comforts of life.

Today, emails, iPhones, laptops, and cell phones dominate our modern world. Our uber-connected lives have made us virtually available at any time, at any place -- the movies, the golf course, traffic lights, you name it.

Basically you use technology from the minute you get up (your alarm clock) to the minute you go to sleep (music).Easy and convenient it may be, however, even though technology benefits our lives greatly, it can go a bit too far.Technological advances have ameliorated our lives but we are becoming too dependent on it with each passing day. Our love affair with new-age developments is leading to health concerns.

The impact of technology on our social, mental, physical and environmental health can be devastating. Listed below are a few such health concerns that you need to look out for and be aware of if you too are victims of technological dependence.

    1. Cellphone use:

According to the National Cancer Institute, the use of mobile phones could potentially pose a risk of brain cancer. Moreover, mobile phone users are more likely to be involved in accidents both in automobiles and on foot.

    2. Poor sleeping habits:

Cuddling up with that laptop in bed or late night phone conversations keep us up till the wee hours. These constant interruptions take a toll our mental states, making it difficult to turn off our brains. Give your brains some time out too!

    3. Development issues:

Today’s children, irrespective of the age group, are using more technology than ever before. When it comes to the cognitive development of children, the negative effects that technology aides are far greater.

    4. Back and neck pain:

Overuse of mobile phones and computers can put a strain on the neck and/or back. Using them in a right manner or a fixed duration can keep you from such discomforts but excess of anything is bad for health, therefore it is essential to limit yourself.

    5. Strain on the eyes:

We spend most of our times glaring at laptops and cell phone screens. Prolonged screen-gazing can make you suffer from a long list of eye problems including burning sensations, changes in colour perception or blurred vision.

    6. Lack of privacy:

Social media and the internet strip one’s privacy. You can try your best but can’t keep your information safe from prying eyes. The use of phishing techniques and hacking gives those with menacing intentions easy access all your privy information.

    7. Obesity risk:

Technology is a crutch. Fascinated by gadgets and gizmos, we don’t move much and gradually get fat. If you don’t want to get unhealthy or overweight, limit the use of technology.

    8. Stress:

Switching from platform to platform and doing several things simultaneously can cause serious problems. Our brain is not capable of multi-tasking and when it happens, there can be severe stress which can also turn into rage.

    9. Relationship issues:

Social networking platforms are to blame for most problems, including breakups and divorce. These platforms also create negative feelings, low self-confidence and self-doubt.

    10. Inappropriate content:

While using the internet, you may accidentally see something inappropriate, usually in the form of pop ups. Not just this, there are spams as well. If you click on something accidentally, explicit content can be sent to your friends.

So use technology, but be smart about it!

Ethiopia may have failed in their bid to win the 2015 Cecafa Senior Challenge title on home soil but as the tournament winds up, the Walias' head coach, Yohannes Sahle, says he has a lot to be happy about from the two-week showpiece.Ethiopia lost their first match of the tournament to Rwanda but grew in strength to reach the semis, where they fell to Uganda on post-match penalties but went on to finish third after beating Sudan in the third-place playoff.

Sahle, speaking after the third-place playoff game noted that his players have gained a lot in the tournament and is banking on the experience to ride the team in future engagements.“We had a slow start to the tournament; it was not the start I had hoped for but afterwards we spoke and I am happy with the way we responded as the tournament progressed. I am happy at the experience gained by the boys.

“Some of my players have only featured in two or three games in their club but I have been impressed in the way they have represented us. They gave their all despite the pressure that comes with playing for your country and I can’t thank them more for an effort well put,” he said.

  • Samsung to pay Apple $548m over patent row

The patent row between Apple and Samsung began in 2011

Samsung has agreed to pay Apple $548m (£362m) as part of a deal to settle a long-running patent dispute. The arrangement was revealed in papers filed to a California court by both companies on Thursday.

The dispute began in 2011 when Apple said Samsung was using some of its patented technologies without permission. The payment does not mean the end of the row as, next year, a US court will decide if Apple deserves more damages.

    Patent exam

A joint case management statement filed to the California court revealed that Samsung had agreed to pay Apple within 10 days of receiving an invoice. The payment is part of a bigger $1bn damages award that Apple was granted in 2012 by a jury that considered the case. That total was reduced on appeal to $930m. Further legal action split this total into two parts - a $548m chunk for technology patents and a $382m chunk for allegations that Samsung copied Apple's packaging materials.A jury is due to decide on the second damages award in 2016.

Despite agreeing to pay the first part of the settlement, Samsung said it reserved the right to get its money back if there were further developments in the case. The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is currently reviewing some of the patents Apple used in the court case.

Apple has disputed Samsung's right to a refund if the patents are ruled invalid. One of the patents in the case, covering ways to add the "pinch to zoom" feature to smartphones, has already been ruled invalid by the USPTO. Apple is appealing against this decision.Soon after the USPTO made the decision to invalidate the pinch patent, Samsung lodged a call to review the entire case with the US appeals court. This call was rejected.

"After years of not getting a cent, more than half a billion dollars is significant," wrote patent expert Florian Mueller in a blogpost. However, he added, the continuing uncertainty about the validity of some Apple patents and Samsung's plans to file fresh appeals meant the case was a long way from reaching resolution.
